Fantastic showing for Jeremy Seewer at Faenza Created: 2020-09-06

The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP crew travelled south to Faenza, Italy, for the sixth round of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship, which was run behind closed doors. The round marked another positive step forward for Jeremy Seewer – he edged closer to his maiden premier-class win and made quite the statement on the old-school circuit.

The level of comfort that Seewer felt aboard his YZ450FM was clear for all to see as soon as qualifying started, as he battled for the top spot for a lot of the session before eventually ending up with the second gate pick. A mediocre start in moto one, just outside of the top five, threatened to hinder him on the fast-paced track, but he made progress immediately and soon started fighting for a position inside of the top three. The on-track battle was so intense that he managed to close in on the top two too – a series of prompt passes then left him in the runner-up position at the chequered flag.

The second moto was just as enthralling for Seewer fans, as he quickly leapt into third place and shadowed the top two riders. Seewer jumped up into second place just after the halfway point and charged after the race leader again, but eventually came up just short. A second separated him from the race win at the end of the moto. A brace of second places left him in second overall and also helped him jump up to fifth in the championship standings. Seewer is just eight points down on the rider in fourth, so is charging up the ladder as the rounds progress.

Gautier Paulin was much better than his overall result of ninth may indicate. Paulin had a strong ride in the opening moto, as he hounded the leaders and crossed the finish line in fifth. The second moto was trending in an even better direction, but a freak crash cost him a significant amount of time. That did not deter him in the slightest though – he got up and charged into eleventh to salvage valuable points. Arnaud Tonus was marred by poor starts, mistakes and freak issues. A crash in moto two forced him to withdraw prematurely, so he was classified in twenty-first overall.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP now face a very quick turnaround, as the seventh stop on the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar will be run on Wednesday at the same Faenza layout in Italy.

Jeremy Seewer: “I feel super good, especially being second on a day like this. I did not expect it. I was close to the win. Jeffrey [Herlings] was always there. We did take some time to pass Jorge [Prado], but he was riding well until he got a bit tired. It’s a tough time for me and I am happy to do my job, and now I am looking forward to having some rest.”

Gautier Paulin: “My feeling is good here: I have good speed. I made my way back to fifth in race one. I had the speed to go with the guys up front but I made a couple of mistakes. I was happy with that and I recovered well in between races. In the second moto, my goal was to be better. I go into fourth but then I made a big mistake. I washed the front and touched the bank with my footpeg, which took my feet off the footpegs and caused a gnarly crash. After that I stood up quickly, but my bike was stuck in the fence. I lost twenty-five seconds there and had to start from twentieth, but I came back to eleventh. I have a good feeling and will be back for more on Wednesday.”

Arnaud Tonus: “I had a terrible day. I messed up the start in the first race. I moved too soon for the gate and then I had an issue with the rear brake. In the second moto, my start was better but then I crashed on the first lap. I came back through the pack, crashed again and hurt my ankle. The x-rays have come back clear, so perhaps it is a bad sprain? We will see how it goes and just hope for the best.”
