Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP 1-2 in Spain! Created: 2022-05-29

Starting a run of three events in succession, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP leapt into action at the Grand Prix of Spain earlier today. Madrid played host to the ninth round of the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship and thousands of passionate fans; spectators filled the man-made facility and basked in glorious sunshine. Temperatures soared as high as thirty-five degrees.

Positivity hummed through the ‘blue’ tent from the moment that the Grand Prix started; Glenn Coldenhoff set the tone on Saturday, as he romped to a clear win in the qualification heat. It was Maxime Renaux who continued that winning form when the point-paying motos fired into life – he took the early lead and ripped to a convincing win aboard his YZ450FM in moto one. The second moto was equally as dominant, as he showed patience and maturity before taking the lead at the halfway mark. Renaux did not falter after that and ripped to an incredible overall victory at the Grand Prix of Spain, which was his first aboard the YZ450FM. It took the rookie just nine races to find his way to the top of the podium!

For Coldenhoff, the win was not too far away. Struggling to turn pole position into a good start in moto one, he occupied fifth at the end of lap one and held that position to the chequered flag. It was a consistent outing and one that he was keen to build on in moto two. Thankfully, he did just that! Coldenhoff had his sights set on glory from the moment that the gate dropped and raced to second position, which was more than enough for second overall on the day. Those 5-2 scores cemented a Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP sweep of the top two steps of the podium!

It was a weekend to forget for Jeremy Seewer – the fan favourite struggled to gel with the rough and rugged Spanish layout. ’91’ was as high as sixth in the first moto, but an untimely crash pushed him to the back of the top fifteen. Eleventh place was salvaged at the chequered flag. Fortunately, Seewer made some progress in the final moto of the day and charged to fourth. 11-4 scores left him in eighth overall at the Grand Prix and helped him maintain third in the championship standings.

The Grand Prix of France, run at Ernee, is next up on the agenda. The spectacular hillside will host the tenth round on June 04/05.

Maxime Renaux: “My first overall win in the MXGP class and it’s my Mum’s birthday tomorrow, so it’s a nice gift for her. That was great. I felt great on the track this weekend, already from Saturday. I managed to get some good starts today and put together two consistent motos with no mistakes, so I am very happy and cannot wait for my home Grand Prix next week.”

Glenn Coldenhoff: “Before Argentina, we did some testing and we made big improvements in all areas. We are on the way up. Yesterday was really good to win the qualifying heat, which gave me a good gate pick for today. I made a huge crash before the first moto and I felt a bit dizzy, which was really tough for me. I still managed to get fifth. I had a good start in the second moto and a good fight with Maxime. I was following him, but he was a bit too strong today. 5-2 was the result. Another good weekend and, like I said, it will only go up from here.”

Jeremy Seewer: “Overall, this has been a weekend to forget. I did turn it around a little bit in the second moto but I just seem to struggle here, even though I did arrive here happy and confident. I was better this year than last year, but I just made mistakes at the worst time and did not feel good on the bike. I don’t think my riding was too bad, but I could not find my rhythm on this track. I made some changes to the bike set-up for the second moto and it feels like we always find the right set-up then, but that’s something we need to work on. For now, I am looking forward to the next GPs. Some of my all-time favourite tracks are coming like Ernee and Teutschenthal, so I hope to find a good combination between me and the bike there and then I can be much better.”
